What's the difference between a router and a cable/dsl modem?
We connect to the internet by just using a router, no modem or anything. How does that work? The router has 4 ethernet ports and 1 usb along with a phone port so it can connect. It has wireless also, but what I don't understand why there's cable modems and routers. Is it also possible to connect to the internet if I have one router downstairs and one upstairs without having them conflict, and without them connecting wirelessly to eachother?
What's a gateway?
If your "router" has a phone line, then it's actually a dsl modem. It just happens to be a modem with a built-in router, which is pretty common these days.
See, modem is short for modulator-demodulator. A modem demodulates the analog signal from your phone line (DSL) or cable TV wire (Cable) into digital data your computer can understand. And, when your computer sends a message, the modem modulates that digital data into an analog signal the line can carry. Modulating, demodulating. Modem, Get it?
A router is a device that allows more than one host, i.e. computer, to share the same connection to the network or internet. Without a router, each computer would have to have its own modem as well as its own phone line or cable. Basically, it creates a private network with IP addresses only the router can see. IP traffic from the outside world is _routed_ to the correct host on that network.
Since most homes have more than one computers, most ISPs offer a combo modem/router as standard equipment. And yes, you can connect a router to another router. This will work fine for internet access, but not necessarily for file and printer sharing around the house since each router creates its own private network.
