Sharing printers between machines?
I have two laptops, work and personal. They both connect to broadband via a wireless router. I have a laser printer attached via parallel cable to the work laptop. Additionally I am looking at purchasing an all-in-one wireless printer.
I would like to configure an arrangement in which I can see and print to either printer from either machine. Will this be straightforward or complex? My main concern is that the work laptop will already be part of a workgroup. Thanks in advance guys.
First, you can set the home computer to be in the same workgroup as your laptop.
Second, if you have a router now, you are almost there.
Be sure that Client for Microsoft Networks is one of the components in your network properties.
Right click on your network connection in control panel and click properties. Look for Client for Microsoft there. If it isn't there use the add, client dialog to add it.
Then be sure file and printer sharing is also one of the components.
When all is set, click ok until you can close the property window.
Next, on the computer that you have the printer connected to, you can select the printer in the start, settings printers . Right click the printer and click the sharing tab. You will need to give it some spiffy name.
On the other computer, you will then need to add the network printer through the same dialog , start, settings, printers - add network printer. Look for the printer you just added and click it.
Repeat this for the other printers you add.
When you get the wireless printer, you will have a configuration utility to allow you to get it on the network and a driver CD. Use them when you get it.
Good luck.
