I own a 2001 Volvo S80 non-turbo. Its seems that it likes to surge at around 2,000 rpms at steady throttle?
at highway speeds. I have replaced fuel filter, cleaned out throttle body, etc With 118,000 ODO it runs great besides that 2,000 rpm surging. Any ideas for me to try next?
'99s to '01 Volvo S80 are Volvo's electronic nightmares at their own admission and there have been many updates in the software for the ECMs. One of the updates was for surging which I had the update installed and my '00 S80 T6 seemed to smooth out mostly. Make sure you check for recalls and service bulletins and have them done. It will save you a hell of a lot of money.
The weakest point on your Volvo is the transmission and there is an important update in the software for it! I know, it cost me a transmission. Make damn sure you have the timing belt changed before 125,000 miles per service letter that states if the belt breaks, it will bend valves and damage the pistons since it is what's called an "interference engine" Results will cost you a new engine or at aminimumn an overhauled engine.
Take it and have the updates installed and timing belt change and while they are in it, change the water pump and tensioners. It will save you a lot of money in the longer run!
