computer cache collecting info, am i right?
Im witting an essay for college and just want to know if ive got the process correct.
The cache is closer to the CPU then the RAM. And cache will search and open temporary files faster most frequently used. If the cache wasnt there the CPU would request the information from the RAM which the RAM sends back through the bus.
It's not written exactly like this but thats the jist of what im on about collecting information.
Can you just tell me if ive got the RAM collecting part correct thanks.
Ok, first of all, incase you haven't know yet, programs are made of data and instructions.
Cache is like a buffer between the CPU and the RAM, because of the speed difference. Therefore, ALL instructions and data must move from the RAM into the cache first, before moving to the CPU.
You got some parts right, yes the cache is closer to the CPU. In modern CPU, cache is on the CPU die itself.
However, its not the cache that search for data that is frequently use. First of all, its the CPU that search the cache. I'll try to explain this from basic, and then to more advance.
Basic operation is, the CPU will first search the cache for data and instructions that it needs to fetch. If it is in the cache, its called a cache hit. The required data will be fetch from the cache then
However, if its not in the cache, this is known as a cache miss. In this situation, the system first have to move the required data from RAM to cache, then only the CPU can fetch the data from the cache.
Remember, I said all data must go through cache first. So even if there's a cache miss, the data cannot move straight from the RAM into the CPU decoder stage, it must still go into the cache
So this means that you need to move the require data into the cache memory. Here's the more advance part that even I can't explain the details, there are many ways of doing this.
When you move new data into the cache, you have to replace something else right. So how do you know which data to replace? here, there are many different algorithm to implement this. But the main aim is to replace the lease frequently use. In this situation, you can use statistic, which means, just keep the data or instruction that has been accessed the most. But this is just one way of doing things.
Its not true that cache only store most frequent data. cache actually store all data. Its only how the cache decide which data to be kept, that it may depends on which data is the most frequently use. That's just one of the technique
Other technique may not depend of frequently use, but instead, they try to predict which data will be use. They can also prefetch data through prediction.
