Is a protection circuit required with A123's Developer Kit Cells?
Been looking at A123's Kit to juice up a Razor E300 scooter and want to know what will be involved in the project.
In any battery and especially Lithium cells, it is best to have a cutoff to disconnect the batteries when the cell voltage drops below a certain point. A123 recommends 2.0 Volt as this level. Below this voltage the lifetime suffers.
While the fire hazard is low with these cells, you will still need a cell temperature sensor for charging. For multi-cell packs, you will also need a balancing circuit so each cell charges to the same point.
