Is it easy to replace my HP Pavilion laptop keyboard?
Something fell off a shelf & broke the "4" & "5" keys.
Thanks!
I was thinking of just gluing the key pads on the little rubber stems that activate the numbers- their function still works.
If you "glue" the keys on, I suggest using caulking (the stuff you seal a bathtub with) it will come off easier if you find another solution. Do NOT use superglue or anything else with harsh chemicals in it. This will destroy the plastic or rubber piece and make your keyboard inoperable. Other things that may work as a key (if they are badly broken) - scrabble pieces (sand one side so the caulking sticks), wood shims (out of the thinner end, but not from the very end - and use clear nail polish on the side that is up so you don't get splinters in your fingertips), buttons (they will not scratch the screen if you close the top), or anything else that is about that size and is easily shaped if not the right size, but firm enough to handle the force of your typing. Do not put anything on the rubber backing that will harden (more than caulking will) - it will be impossible to remove it all. It sounds like you only need new keys. You may be able to get those for a decent price - unknown...

Replacing anything on a laptop generally is not easy. Most of the screws are hidden under labels, and the tabs that hold the shell together are impossible to see because they are on the inside. Once the laptop has been opened, it is typical to need some things stacked up to hold one piece of the main unit (bottom or top) while you work on the unit. the cabling for a laptop is not anything like the cabling for a desktop - laptop connections are usually opaque ribbon cable with copper trails (FRAGILE!) pushed or clamped into a slot on the motherboard. Your laptop may have a daughter board making things even more difficult - the connection you seek may be under the daughterboard and disassembly of the laptop beyond a certain point (usually here) is not recommeneded for a person who is not used to working with a large number of small parts.
If you decide to do this yourself, decide in advance how you are going to have the entire unit face the entire time you work on it. Use a large table if possible. Place the screws generally where they go (but off to the side) in close to the same pattern so you can reassemble the laptop easier. It also helps to have a jewel case from a CD handy in case you need to insulate components (other non-conductive materials work, jewel cases are fairly handy). If you have not yet ordered the part, you may want to do so, and consider finding someone with more tech experience to do the actual work. Once you see the steps, you will feel more comfortable with opening up a laptop, it is a very intimidating thing to do if it is your first time.
I also just now recalled that my laptop has a blue "Fn" key and another key that enables numberlock and some of the keys have in blue the numberpad. This may be a good workaround until your part arrives or you find a tech who can do this for you and won't charge an arm and a leg.
Another note - right after you crack the case open, you want to decide how the whole thing will be oriented while you work on it. I didn't mean to confuse or mislead you.
Almost all of the ribbon cables that connect the two shell pieces will USUALLY be towards the back end, but THIS IS NOT ALWAYS SO.
