Drum mics and mixer help?
I have two five piece drum sets that iv put together! How many mics do i need if i have 2 snares and bass pedals, 4 toms, 2 f. Toms, annd 4 cymblas oh and hi hat! So how many drum mcs do i need and wud getting the 7 and 4 piece drum mic touring kit for cad work? Also on tbe mixer should i get powered or unpowered for my drum mics, i have a pair of speakers cud i just run the mics into mixer into speakers or is there more to it? And can drum mics work through a 15 watt amp line 6 amp if i need so many?
Professional, live drum, mic set ups can be insanely complex or incredibly simple, depending on the venue and music style.
I'll assume you want gig at bars and clubs and play rock music...?
I wouldn't bother micing every tom, cymbal and cowbell.
Mic both kick drums (2), your main snare (1), your high hats (1), and use one mic for every two toms. (3) just position the mics between the two. For a grand total of 7 mics.
I wouldn't even bother micing the cymbals. They cut through all but the loudest guitar parts on their own.
Drum mics are dynamic mics and don't require a phantom power source like condenser mics. Mixing boards and mics use XLR plugs, so get one with enough inputs for your needs. From there it sends a signal to an external amp and PA system.
I just reread your question...I believe you need to rethink your reasoning to mic your drum kit.
Going through all of the mics, cables, mixers, etc. only to run it all through a 15 watt guitar amp is idiotic. The drum kit on it's own is 10 times as loud as any 15 watt solidstate combo-amp!
You mic a drum kit through a PA system, NOT a weeny guitar amp OR your home stereo.
