a six pack is not the same thing as a strong core. you don't need a beach body for this sport. it wouldn't hurt, but it certainly wouldn't help. However, a strong core will help.
The core includes your transverse abdominus, your obliques, your lower back, and your hips and hip flexors. These muscles are important because they help maintain your balance. Also, it's the focus or center of your entire body, and you need it to be strong to control everything else. It may sound kind of corny, but it's true. A strong core will dramatically improve your form, and an improved form will in turn improve your times.
But take this with a grain of salt. Youre not going to drop a minute off your time because of your core. Training your legs and lungs is vastly more important than your core.
Work on the things you need to improve one, i.e. leg strength, breathing, aerobic fitness, anaerobic fitness. And keep the things you're good at in check.
