Are Wireless Network LAN Cards any good?
Hi I have a Netgear DG834GSP modem. I want to move the desktop computer (to which it's connected) to another room but don't want to have to muck around with cords in the roof to make a phone outlet in the room to which the PC would be moved. Somebody told me that the no-brand wireless LAN cards(to plug into the PC) off eBay would do the job in carrying the connection. Is this generally right? Are they pretty effective?
If you MUST go wireless, a lan card is the ONLY way to go. DO NOT buy a wireless usb dongle unless it comes with an external antenna! That being said, wireless is a poor method of connecting to your network as latency becomes a big problem and gets progressively bigger the farther you get from the modem/router. You will lose at least 30 percent of your internet speed and maybe more depending on how far away you are. I personally wouldnt run a desktop on a wireless connection. The networking cable isnt that hard to string.
EDIT: And I would bet money that Trish has never done a speed test either! Why lose 30 percent of your bandwidth you pay for? Thats kinda like poking a hole in your car gas tank 2/3ds of the way up and then filling the tank!.
