Why use two cisco routers, Suggestion for ccna lab?
I am beginning to work on my CCNA from cisco, i was wondering what the benefits of connecting 2 routers together was. I was also wondering what u would suggest for a ccna lab, i was thinking about using the 2500 series router and a catalyst switch.
by the benefits of connecting two routers together i meant two cisco routers.
i was talking about using more than one router in a working network like at a business or something what are the benefits of using more than one router.
For study purposes, the BIG advantage to having two (or more) routers is that you can run dynamic routing protocols on the routers and gain a better understanding and deeper insight into them. This will be important to understand how routes propogate, how default (GoLR) is handled, adjacencies/neighbor's, policy and filters, summarization, authentication, etc. Two routers can provide you with a lot of routing knowledge. I do not know what the CCNA specifically covers these days, so I cannot comment on whether a 2500 is "good enough" or not ... they will top out in the 12.0 area code wise, so if the exam is based on something newer, like 12.2, then there could be some issues ... again, I do not know.
As for in production - the question is not so easy to answer. Here are some common scenarios in which multiple routers are needed, and there are likely dozens more depending on your situation/line of business.
1) Redundant LAN Gateways ... running HSRP/GLBP/VRRP between them for redundant gateways for hosts.
2) WAN - probably most common reason (at least here in the states). If you have 10 sites, you need (at least) 10 routers typically.
3) VLAN Routing - if you are in a campus scenario where you may have lots of VLAN's defined, you often want a LAN Router to route between them (MSFC/6500 style).
4) Security enhancements site-to-site: NAC modules, IPS modules, Firewall Features, etc.
