The keypad of a telephone works on a principle called DTMF, which stands for Dual Tone, Multi Frequency. The keypad is divided up into rows and columns, each of which has a frequency associated with it. Each time you touch a specific key, two tones are created, one that indicates the row, another to indicate the column. This is why the sound of the touch tone sounds muddled to your ear.
