The farther you are from the router, the less signal you get. Is that your own router or you are just hitchhinking from someones Internet connection. I have a Linksys router and my neighbor 2 floors below can get excellent signal from my router and I don't have any difficulty using 4 laptops and a desktop at the same time.
Get a router with speed booster if you a DSL connection.
