what PoE (Power over Ethernet) is and in what environment it may be usefully deployed?
Power over Ethernet is a standard for providing just that - power via the network cable. It's useful for low voltage devices. I see it mostly with telecomm and IP enabled phones. The phone on my desk gets its power from a POE switch and no wall plugin required.
