Is a car subwoofer supposed to suck air in or blow it out?
The majority of people I spoke to said that sucking it in can damage the sub but a few said it shouldn't matter (all of these people were experienced in audio in one manner or another.)
My sub is a Rockford Fosgate 12" Punch 2 and I could swear it has always pushed air out. The negative wire that connects the power source connectors (the buttons that you plug the wires into) and the cone of the sub, the wire broke because of a design flaw. Now it seems like it sucks air in.
Reversing the polarity of the wires didn't help and I had to sodder that wire back down to reconnect it, and that was done by a professional.
subwoofers both "push" and "suck" air. The sub moves back and forth in the box and when it moves into the box it pushes air out of the port. when the cone moves out of the box air is sucked in the port.
If you put something lightweight, like a plastic shopping bag, or tissue paper, in the mouth of your port you can see that it moves back and forth very fast. It doesn't get sucked in or pushed out.
The lower the frequency of bass, the longer the sub takes to move back and forth.
