What everyone said above is correct. The WiFi owner knows everything you are doing if they want to log it, the ISP the WiFi is using is logging stuff all the time to cover themselves. If you are on Wifi at some hotspot then anyone who wants to can see where you are going and what you are doing since you are on a big shared connection. I suggest you invest in a personal vpn like Surfbouncer. They will encrypt everything between your laptop and their servers so none of the above can see what you are doing. When you come out on their servers your traffic is mixed in with all of their other users making it very difficult for someone to figure out what is yours and what is from what could be thousands of other users.
This is pretty good privacy. However, you should know that there is no such thing as total anonymity on the internet and law enforcement and such can always figure out what you are doing if they are determined to spend the time and effort.
